Dear Mrs. Butler:

I've just the other day received your letter written in August. Ordinary mail takes a very long time to reach us, then again I'm not with the unit now but in North Africa so the letter had that much more traveling to do. The cause of my being here in N.A. is a motorcycle accident I had in October where I had a bone broken in my food, so I was sent to hospital over here. Now I'm quite well and O.K. again and am waiting at the reinforcement depot to be sent back to the unit again. It's been nice to get a glimpse of this country but I've had enough of it and won't be sorry when I leave it. Really it's even worse then Sicily and the nations are terribly dirty, there's nothing romantic about the shieks I've seen. Well dear folks I'm glad my letter was of some little comfort to you and I assure you again that Karl did not suffer any. I can well imagine what a great shock it was to you and I know the sorrowful suffering you felt as I felt it too and still do, I can't get over it truthfully. May the Good Lord this Xmas and in the New Year use the kind in our hearts with a free for all troubles in the years to follow and the knowledge that Karl did not give his life in vain. My sympathy and best wishes to you & the family.

Sincerely, J.C
