On the Train between
Winnipeg & Port Arthur

My Dear Wife:

Just a few lines to let you know how we are getting on. We arrived at Winnipeg last night at 8:20, and were surprised to see the large number of people at the station. As the train drew up at the station women, girls and men stretched out their hands and gave us a shake. We were surprised, but some found out that the cheering & hand shakes were not meant for us. The 45th Battalion was leaving for the front and the first section left at 8p.m. they got on the train 2 miles [?] the station and the people thought we were the second section going away. The second section left at 8:30, and there was lots of cheering. At 9 the regular passenger went out, and at 930 our 2 cars were hooked on to the third section of the 45th and we left. [?] the third section was the Band and that morning they paid us a visit and we had music for an hour. I think they are going on the same boat. On the train there are 12 cars and 600 men. The food is good. We got our badges at Winnipeg and this morning we were busy putting them on. It is snowing now and has been all night. there is a YMCA man on the train who sells stamps and collects letters & posts them. This is a dreary desolate country. This weather makes you think of home, and some one to snuggle up to, you, old sweetheart. I certainly miss you & the children. I hope you and the kiddies are well & like the post cards.

with Love & Kisses to self & children XXXXXXX for you X
your loving Hubby

With Love &
a million X X X
