Dear Mr. & Mrs. Quinlan :-

There is no need for me to say how shocked I was and how badly I feel when I heard of Jacks death on operations.

I suppose one should more or less live prepared for such things to happen in wartime. Somehow, it doesn't seem quite possible that Jack wont come sailing through this mess with flying colors as he has always done in the past.

To me, it seems so ironical that Jack who had more to look forward to after this war than any of the rest of us should be struck down - as we all know, his, would have really been a brilliant future.

It will be up to those who survive this war to make good and sure that, Billy, Michael Harris, my son Pat, and thousands of other lads are not involved in another needless sacrifice of lives in an equally needless war.

In closing, I can say that you have a son you can be well proud of, as at all times he had the respect and devotion of his many friends.
