No doubt by this time you have had official word of Herbs death, he with several other Band boys were out on a carrying party 6 S. A. lads and Geo Wood were together when a high explosive shell came over and burst among them, killing Leo Wood, badly injuring Herb, and slightly injuring Arthur Gooch. Jack Gooch came back to camp for help some 2.5 miles I with a party of 10 went to their help with all speed, the boys had bandaged him up to the best of their ability, but it was a bad night, heavy mud, and the shells were still coming over thick I spoke to him and found he was very week and in considerable pain, I asked him if he had any message for you he said "Don't say anything, it will only worry them" then later "Please give me something to ease the pain," so I gave him some morphine and carried him back to camp but he died on the way in. He is being buried to-day in the British Cemetery near here and a suitable cross will be erected.

Let me assure you of the deepest sympathy of all the Band boys especially his S.A. comrades.
