Corp. Love Writes (FROM BELGIUM)

Corp. F.M. Love, 4th Battery, 1st Brigade in a letter to his father written from Belgium on November 9th, tells considerable of their life there that is of interest, from which we take the following:

I have been sick for two weeks suffering from rheumatism in my legs and shoulder. I am some better now but always in pain. We are having very rough weather, I bought a pair of rubber boots, they help some, but of course one's body always gets wet and sleeping in wet clothes is no picnic. Norman (McIntosh) has been bad with rheumatism. He has been in bed for a week. I got a letter from F.M. Field the other day. I sent him a field card and he wrote me a three page letter. I will write him when I have time. All the Cobourg boys are well. I saw a lot of the infantry last week. I have not seen the Heavy Battery as yet, although I believe they are out here. If you are fixing up a Christmas parcel, a pair of gloves would come in handy, out driving these cold mornings and nights.

In a later letter to his mother written November 13th, Corp. Love says:

I have a few spare minutes this afternoon so I am going to spend them with you. We are having very miserable weather now. It is raining outside just now but I am in the corner of an old barn so I do not mind how much it rains as long as I am not called out.

Lieut Kelly came back to us three days ago but I do not know where Stuart (Craig) is. I have not been talking to Lieut Kelly yet to ask for Stuart, I see a lot of the Second Contingent, but they do not seem to know where the Heavy Battery is.

I do not think I will play much hockey this winter by the way things are now. I suppose I will spend Christmas in some old barn or house this year.

My gun has just been complimented on the fine work which we did this morning. The officer says we knocked down five men out of six.

I guess this letter will just reach you in time to answer before Christmas, and do not forget that it will be a hungry time out here.
