Camp near Chickahomminay [?]
June 4, 1864

My dear Momma

I sent a letter off in answer to your last some time ago but as I have no stamps, I doubt whether it would cross the lines, so I will write this and be sure at all events. I suppose you get all the news of our doings here in the papers and probably more about the progress of the Campaign than I do for all I know about it is confined to the narrow limits of a field hospital and the flying [?] of the [?]. We are now within 12 miles of Richmond. We have lost a great many men, half of our regiment are either killed or wounded. I am very busy night and day so cannot make this a long letter as the ambulances are bringing in wounded every minute. War is awful and I have seen a great deal of its horrors and hope and trust it will be over soon. I never enjoyed better heath and have slept in a half an inch of water with no covering but a blanket many a night but it seems to agree with me and perhaps will do me good. But I must hurry to the Hospital. Write soon and give me all the news and with love to Papa and Rhoda and yourself, dear Mamma

I remain
Your affectionate Son
