Mon. Apr. 16 -

Sunny in morning but rained before day was over. Guns hammered away all night and during day. Had plenty to eat. In evening, it rained, hailed and snowed and for most of the night. The "bivy" I slept in was not very waterproof and water came in from underneath. My blankets were soon wet and before long, I found myself lying in pools of water. And so I spent the night - my clothes all wet trying to curl up into the driest spots and keep as warm as possible. Many of the drivers were up with ammunition & to move guns that night. They were rather badly shelled - many horses died from exhaustion so men were out all the night and when they did come back wet and tired out, had no dry place to go to.
