Frensham Pond Oct 28.18 My darling Dorothy:- How glad I was to get your long long letter, the other day & you have been having some wonderful holidays havent you. across the water to Lewistown & up to Uncle Georges. Why your life has been a regular picnic hasn't it. pretty near a good one as Dad's & he has been having a real good holiday lately, living in a tent & having a good bed to go to at night, that is real the tip top wish of a soldiers ambition to have a good bed, lots to eat - that fully constitutes a soldiers heaven & of course not too much work. Just enough to let him feel he is not quite a loafer all together. on the pond in front of us are a whole lot of wild ducks & several large white swans. & every once in a while these big clumsy birds take it into their head to go for a fly & the noise they make! Well its simply awful. the first start getting up speed on the water & it takes them fully a minute to get clear of that but the noise they make is like the paddle wheels of the Chippewa when it is backing water. & the noise as they go over our heads is like an aeroplane. We call call them the Engineers flying squadron they make a noise like one too. We have lovely sand to play in here in fact the whole of the ground here is sand would not you love to be here. wouldn't you just hug Dad if you could only see him. Dad was visiting a lovely farm last Friday night & he saw the loveliest jersey cow & calves how you would have enjoyed seeing them dear they have the most wonderful eyes. Then they had a big cat who loved to play with every one. 4 dogs black ones 3 horses some big rabbits chickens & many other things which you would have all enjoyed. I had some real cream & real butter for my Tea, something wonderful dearie, cream is a prohibited article in this country but they had a wee bit off the milk & to be kind to me gave it. Now I must close as I'm getting hungry & the bugle for supper is just going to sound. They dont call. The meal about 5 supper here its tea & they always laugh at me when I call it that but I don't mind what they do. They are usually very kind now darling a big hug & a X from Dad to his loving chum.
