Diary

July 15 - Arrived at Selkirk at 10 a.m. on the Red River, 24 miles north of Winnipeg. We were glad to get ashore again. Our boat the first arrival. The Midlands were first ashore and a rush was made for the town, the little old Town of Selkirk, older than Winnipeg, both on the shores of the Red River. The townspeople gave us a lunch at noon, quite a spread outdoors in their park.
Now here a separation takes place. All the other battalions take their boats on to Winnipeg, while we, the Midlands, cross to the east side of the river and take a train east, to Port Arthur, in order to reach Port Hope quickly as possible to attend the funeral of Col. Williams. All on the train and on the move for Port Arthur at 11 p.m.
