GUNNER CALDWELL WRITES.

Gunner R,A, Caldwell of the Machine Gun Section of the Second Battalion, who enlisted at Cobourg, and who was reported both killed and wounded, although fortunately there was no truth in either report, has written to a friend in Lindsay, In his letter received on June 24th he says:

I have not heard from you for a long while. Perhaps the announcements in the papers of my untimely ending caused you to worry, I read of my death saw various types of 'In Memoriam' in several papers while I was in the trenches this last time. We did a ten day's stunt this time and every kind of shells from 'Little Willies' or the 'Whiz- bangs,' or the 'Wooly-Woolies' or '10' was fired at us. I had the closest shave I ever had while there. A 'little Willie' burst a couple of yards ahead of me and the flash nearly blinded me, Lucky this shell has no back fire or the papers would only have had to change a couple of dates, Poor Doug Mitchell got a crack on the head, I think it is not serious - hope so anyway, We are out for a few days rest the people know that I am alive,
