France Feb 27/17
Dear Mother,-
Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and getting along fine although it is no fun up in the front line trenches. We were in the front line for six days. I was on duty about thirteen hours a day tramping through mud and water up to my knees most of the time. Just at present we are back in reserve. We are living in a big cave 50 or 60 ft deep and are quite safe back here. And even up in the front line the danger isn’t nearly as great as I expected. We have six or seven hours fatigue work to do every night but I am getting used to it now and can still say that I am glad I came over
I have not received any mail from home since I came to France but I suppose I should get some soon I wish you would send me a paper once in a while as I will know what is going on at home so that I won’t be altogether a stranger when I come back.
Well I guess that is all for this time. Dont worry if you dont hear from me regularly for it is often impossible to write for weeks at a time. Hoping to hear from you often I remain your loving son
