My Own Dear Mother,
I was very pleased to get another letter from you this afternoon. The one in answer to mine of July 8th. Perhaps Dad is right in thinking it is not time for you to come across yet. It might be better to wait until next spring, when we may be able to make a good guess at when the war will end. And if you do not fall in with my proposal about the passage over, certainly get yourself a costume or something just as a gift from me. Because I did not get anything for your birthday. I am pleased to know Eve has got such a good position and hope she will like it. I wish I could get a more comfortable place to write in. This what we are in now used to be a house there are four of us sleeping in the remains of a room inhabited by millions of flies, but night is drawing nigh now and most of them have gone to roost. There are no doors or windows left to this house and very little roof, but it is very fine and warm weather just now so it is just exactly what we want. It must have been built two or three hundred years ago by the shape of it. But we are very happy in it. There is a good part of the kitchen left also the stove, and we have a good cook so what more do we want. Well honey I have not much more to say to you, Gran is keeping well also the Raines. It is very near two years since I left you hasn’t the time gone quick. You remember the morning we left Vancouver. Poor Hilda. I wonder how she is, I never write now nor does she. I have asked Queene to send you her picture. Well you must let me close now, it is pretty warm writing. So give Eve a kiss for me. Hope Dad is well
With my very best love
Eddie
