Dear Mother and Dad,

I have already told you that we are operating off the Sakishima group of islands. Well I have just heard a news broadcast which said that a major unit of our fleet suffered damage but is now in action again so I am writing to tell you that I am alright myself so you will not be worried. I expect you will worry until you get this but unfortunately I cannot send a wire or anything. – We are all hoping now to be relieved since the German war is over but please do not bank on it. We expect to be here a while yet. We have to be realistic, I suppose, and this war out here is as important to finish properly as the other one. –

We have a Petty officer in the squadron, Mother, whose hobby is mending clothes and sewing. He has just patched two of my shirts and has even turned one of the collars so you can see I am being looked after as if I were at home. – By the way when you use the above address do not put in G.P.O. London. When you just put in Br. F.M.O. it goes to the nearest place and is sent straight out from there.
