Welcome to Sister Squire

Nursing Sister Lieut. Gertrude L. Squire, who returned recently on a brief furlough after over two and a half years service abroad, was tendered a most enthusiastic reception on Wednesday evening last when the town hall was filled to the doors with people who came together at the invitation of the Daughters of the Empire to honor this young heroine.

Mr. E. P. Cuffe, chairman of the Board of Education, called the meeting to order, and on behalf of the community extended a very cordial welcome to Sister Squire. This was followed by the presentation to Miss Squire of two handsome shower bouquets on behalf of the Daughters of the Empire and the Women’s Institute, Mrs. (Col) Birdsall, regent of the former society, and Mrs. Rahal, president of the latter, expressing their welcome, while the flowers were presented by Madeline Bond and Gordon Rathwell. The gifts and words of greeting were gratefully acknowledged by Miss Squire.

Brief informal addresses were also made by Dr. S.P. Ford, Mr. R.G. Lawlor, B.A., Rev. A. Mansell Irwin, B.A., B.D., and after much persuasion, Miss Squire was induced to return to the platform and briefly recounted some of her experiences and observations abroad. The addresses were interpersed with patriotic songs by the pupils of the public school and solos by Miss Una Duffield and Miss Ada Rahal. Instrumental selections were also rendered by Misses May Walker, Reba Squire, Jean Roxburgh, Sadie Greenbank, Evangeline Patterson, Alethea Duffield and Master Vaughan Finlay.
