My Dear wife and daughter

First another short note from the trenches, to let you know that I am O.K. and feeling fit. It is still very cold, they say it is the worst winter in France for twenty years. I want you to send me over a pair of leather gloves, for the ones they issue you here aint worth anything, and dont last long, besides that, they are getting very scarse, at least it seems hard to get a new pair you understand. Another thing we are supposed to get rum, but they dont in this Battln, but we are supposed to get soup instead, well I for one have not seen nor tasted the soup yet, and it would be allright this weather, especially on these working parties, as they call them, it is getting now, that if you hav’nt got a rifle in your hand you have a pick or a shovel or a sand bag, its getting a great [lye?] word here, daddy what did you do in the war, put France in sand bags. I know this letter is just one big kick but it is how I feel, I was on a working party yesterday morning and last night too, that going some, Fritz took pity on us I think for he started shelling us pretty bad so the officer in charge very wisely brought us in before anybody was hit, but we only had one more hour to work anyhow, so it did’nt save us very much.

Well Kiddo Im going to ring off before I say to much, remember me to all the folks and be good yourself Kiss little sweetheart for me

I remain your loving husband.
Frank
