HOW Pte. McAULEY MET HIS DEATH

Mrs. Margaret McAuley, whose son, Pte. W.E. McAuley, was killed in action recently, has received the following letter from Capt. D. OLIVER, Chaplain, 4th Battalion, C.R. T., France.

Dear Mrs. McAuley:
It is with deepest sorrow that I have to inform you of the death of your son, W.E. McAuley, 814920, which took place on Saturday morning, July 11th. He was struck by a bomb from a German aeroplane and only lived for a few hours and was unconscious all the time. He was buried in the military Cemetery with military honors. Father Gordon, a Roman Catholic chaplain, read the burial service. He was a splendid boy, steady and attended regularly to his religious duties and was a great favorite with both officers and men of the battalion. He drove the motor car for his company, so we all came in daily contact with him.
Officers and men of the Battalion join me in sending you our deepest sympathy in your bereavement, and we pray God to sustain you in your sore trial.
Yours sincerely,
D. OLIVER.

P. S... A cross with his name, number and Battalion printed on it has been erected over his grave. His personal effects will be forwarded to you in due time. You will hear all about them from Ottawa.
