My dear Mother

How delighted I was to receive your note in with the handkerchiefs and I'll tell you why.

We had been for a 16 mile route march (full pack) that afternoon and reached camp again at 6.30 dead tired and faged out, so I went and washed my feet, had some tea and went straight to bed. Consequently I was nearly asleep when the mail came in but aroused myself when I heard my name. Of course I knew at once what the package contained but when I opened it and found a letter, which would turn my mind homewards as I dozed off to sleep. I was more than thankful to Ma for spending a few minutes of her busy morning to write it.

Sorry to hear Allen does not improve in health and hope by now you have had a Doctor in to see him, unless he is better.

We have had a particularly hard week up to now, just to make up for Christmas, I suppose, but whatever we do tomorrow we shan't trouble much for we get paid during the morning. What Ho!!

Now I must stop.
