No. 56 Training Squadron,
R. F. C.
Aug. 11, 17.
Just got your letter or rather Viv's, in an envelope addressed by you. Thanks very much for promptness in forwarding it.
I had my first trip in a Spad last evening. Was up for an hour and got to twelve thousand where I was buzzed around and got acquainted with the peculiarities of the bus. I "took off" in fine style (colossal wind up) and landed as well as any Spad has been seen to land here, much to my surprise!! The C.O. and Flight Commander said "splendid exhibition" when I got into the sheds - I felt very bucked, especially as it's the machine I'll be using on service. The type of machine, I mean.
I am going up again this morning for an hour and hope to get in town for the evening. Have asked Ab. and D. for theatre tonight.
Poor "Shirley" Kellogg is missing in today's list. He was from Toronto and here with me. I told you about him getting 5 Hun bullets in the back last fall in an air scrap. My Avro instructor has "gone West" so we hear. Must close now and do some buzzing.
Am looking forward to seeing you next week
