Dear Mom & Dad,

I just sat down to put a few lines in with a photo I had taken in Calcutta while I was there on a leave for a few days and I suddenly remembered that tomorrow is your birthday, and the 19th is Dad's. I don't know when this will arrive but you well know I wish you both many happy returns of the day. Oh yes, yesterday I got the box you made up for Uncle Lin for me. I sent everybody postcards and on Uncle Lin's I thanked him. I had three prints of the photo made and I sent one to Margaret and one to Jim. How is Gwen? Is she with you yet? The heat is terrible night & day here but we swim every day before supper & that helps considerably.

Calcutta was hotter than here but the good food & real beds with sheets were a treat. I got a letter from the "Book League" about a bill for books sent since my leaving Coal Harbour. I told them to send it to you. Please look after it if you hear from them. I'll have to turn in now for some rest. Good night.

Your loving son, Joe.
