Norwood Register, July 5, 1917

Pte. Hartley S. Ivey writing from Seaford, England, June 10th, says:- We have been in the infantry since May 17th.  It is quite a job here to get enough time to write a decent letter.  Our camp is on the sea-shore and quite often we hear heavy commanding across the water.  New Haven harbour is only 2 1/2 miles from us.  Many nights we sit up in our bunks and watch the gun's fire shoot ouit from the fort in to the ocean.  We have a fine camp here as it is Canadian headquarters.  Two weeks ago this morning Capt. Neilson sat immediately in front of me in church here in the Y.M.C.A.  He was quite surprised to see me.  Capt. Walter Thomson is at Hastings, only a short distance from here, and I expect to see him soon.  Give my best regards to the boys and tell them I have been six feet from the door of the house where King Alfred let the cakes burn.
