Dear Mother

I got your letter on Sunday and the candy on Monday.  The candy saved my life sure.  I was on fatigue Monday at the officers mess, and for supper we had soup, Roast Beef with potatoes and fresh Yorkshire pudding and apple sauce.  But no pie.  The shock was almost too much for me.  To have the beginning of a square meal and not the finish.  I am inclosing the letter I wrote to you on Sunday.  We got called out to day, and I was chosen to go with the regiment.  I have a shirt, a suit of Underwear and a pennant to send home, but I have no way of sending them.  I am enclosing that jigger.  There is some others about the regiment going to the front I hear and we are trying like the deuce to get away.  I think we will go, as we are the best regiment in camp, and we are all ready to go.  We are getting lots of Drill.  Well, Mother I think I will write a letter to Ted.

Ted

Attention, fellow

I don’t know where I will write to you from again. As we expect to go anytime now.  Khaki, with Puttees, Tan Boots, and Khaki Cap.  We are all fitted out complete now.  There is one lieutenant in the regiment and he went and turned out the guard the other day to inspect it.  He was the Orderly officer of the day.  He said Attention, and they came to attention, and then he said for inspection Poht Bah (meaning Port Arms) and they stood at ease.  He called them to attention, again, and bellowed Poht Bah, and they stood at ease again, whereupon the Corporal of the Guard took them in hand.  Fellow, I am one of the picked men.  Latest report is, we are going Wednesday.  Today when we were in parade, the Brigadier General, and Major Lipsett were inspecting us.  One of the fellows was standing with his equipment hanging halfway down his back.  The Major spoke to him, and he [?] on his gun.  The Major kicked him out of the regiment.  Well fellow, so long
Charlie
