TORONTO OFFICER KILLED BY SNIPER
Lieut. G. B. L. Mackenzie Died After Carrying Out Daring Reconnaissance.
LONG LIST OF HONOR
Survivor of the Recent Heavy Fighting is on Way Home.
Lieut. G. B. L. Mackenzie, only son of Mr. George A. Mackenzie, of Toronto, met his death in action, as has already been announced, on June 7. The following extracts are from a letter received by Lieut. Mackenzie’s father from Major Douglas Mason, of the 3rd Battalion, who was recently wounded:
“This morning, after carrying out an important and very successful reconnaissance, Lieut. Mackenzie was hit through the heart and instantly killed by a sniper. During the past seven months I had become very fond of George and shall miss him greatly, as indeed we all shall. He was always cheery under the most trying circumstances and always ready. . . . There never was an unpleasant or dangerous bit of work that he was not more than ready to undertake. During the past few rather strenuous days George carried out on his own initiative several daring and very valuable reconnaissance, over unknown ground. This morning he reconnoitred a new enemy trench at very close quarters, accompanied by a sergeant. The sergeant was hit in the leg and George brought him in. He was on his way to report the results of his work when he was hit.’’
