Dear Ethel

just a few lines to you in answer to your most kind and ever welcome letter hoping you are in the best of health as it leaves me the same at present Well dear Girl they havn’t sent me to the front yet I wish they would I am getting fed up with stopping here it is dull and miserable now we are practicaly living in the trenches and they are all clay and it is terrible now it is wet and cold I think we are going to have a long winter this year this life is alright in the summer but it is rotten just now I often wish I was at home over a good fire. I expect Mildred have told you all about Herbert being in action and his was the only boat saved he is now lying in Valparaiso for repairs she got 5 shell holes in her and 4 men wounded wasn’t she lucky it has been a great worry to us all we thought he was lost for good we couldn’t get any new of the Glasgow for over a fortnight it has taken a load off our minds I can tell you. I am sending you one of my little Herberts photos one I have been carry about with me as I have got another one of him now He will be a year old next thursday he is getting on much better now I went home to see him a fortnight ago and he hadn’t forgotten me he is got a fair little rogue just like young Tommie was Now I don’t think I can say any more this time so give my best respects to your Husband Now I must close with heaps of love hoping to hear from you again soon
