Dear Marg and Marie,–

How are you girls? Oh that’s good, I feel Tops and in A.1. condition myself at the present moment. I am sorry I couldn’t write you sooner but the truth is I have had neither the place time nor material to do so. We have been rather busy with this little episode of ours over here again as you have no doubt seen in the papers by this time. I imagine that you can just about judge at where I am situated at the present moment. Your calculations the last time are quite correct.

For the past while, in fact since I last wrote you our warfare over here has been somewhat the same as the old slit trench days in Normandy if you remember me telling you about them. We have been in a few rather tough spots but I have managed so far to get out unharmed (touch wood.) At the present moment things have calmed down somewhat to what they were, as far as we are concerned. Right now we have taken over a German farm house and are bunking with civilians. Of course we still do as we like and have our usual luxuries here on the farm. Bacon and eggs and plenty of meat and potatoes are always at our ready disposal here any time that our little hearts desire them.

I received a lovely box from Mum about 10 days ago when I was at the last German farm house I was telling you about. It arrived at exactly the right time as I needed every thing that was in it, especially the socks.

The other day I was talking to a fellow in our platoon whose name is Brand and had married a Greenlaw girl somewhere around Vasey. After I get talking to him for a while I find out that he is a first cousin of Frances’. A funny coincidence because we had been in the same platoon for such a long time before we found this out. Really in this man’s army the guy next to you is your best friend, but you don’t know what or who he is.

Well girls enough for now I’ll say “so long” and I’ll try my best to keep you posted.
